Johnny PayCheck’s “Old Violin,” Celebrates 38th Release Anniversary

Outlaw country pioneer Johnny PayCheck‘s other signature song, the powerful and poignant “Old Violin,” which originally appeared on his Modern Times album, celebrates the 38th anniversary of its release in March, 1987 by Mercury Records. Record Executive Steve Popovich (Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan) was the album’s Executive Producer and he also headed Polygram Nashville, the imprint label for Mercury Records which released the album.

Despite “Old Violin” only peaking at #21 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in 1987along with being PayCheck’s only self-written song on the album, the song is widely considered to be one of his signature songs, second only to “Take This Job & Shove It.” Other notable country artists who’ve recorded “Old Violin” include George StraitDaryle Singletary, and Creed Fisher.
