Michael W. Smith Talks About His New Single ‘Your Love is a Flood’ and 2025 Tour

‘Your Love is a Flood’ single

On the concept for “Your Love is a Flood,” Smith stated, “It fell out of the sky. Random pop things. The melody, the whole chord progression, the verse and chorus were all written nearly five years ago. I still have the old demo, and kept going back and listening to it. I just couldn’t shake it.”

“So, I reached out to a great friend, Jason, who helped me write a lot of the lyrics on this record, and I asked him if the song moved him, and five days later, he had an idea lyrically,” Smith elaborated.

“I love that I can write songs that are energetic and pop because those are hard to write sometimes The song is aggressive musically,” he noted.

“Then, I got creative and I wrote this crazy bridge, and I re-wrote the ending of the song, and that’s how it came together,” Smith admitted. “We decided that it needed to be the second single from the record.”

Music and songwriting inspirations

Regarding his music and songwriting inspirations, Smith remarked, “Ultimately, I think God for the inspiration, and I certainly don’t want to blame Him for the bad songs I’ve written.”

“So, I keep my ears open and I like to listen to a lot of different things. At the end of the day, I’ve developed something that sounds like me. I don’t want to sound like anybody else. I want it to sound like Michael W. Smith,” he explained.

“There are days when I go into my studio and there is just nothing there, and you think it’s over,” he noted. “Then, all of a sudden, two months later, you can’t hit ‘record’ fast enough so it’s a mystery to me.”

“The whole songwriting thing is a complete yet beautiful mystery to me,” Smith added.

“It is a different day and age, I think there are wonderful opportunities to get your music out to people that normally didn’t have a catch back in the day, especially since they needed to have a record deal,” he explained.
